Why Grout Sealing?

Question – Do I Really Need to Seal My Tile and Grout?
Answer – It’s important to realize that there are two parts of a tile floor…the tile and the grout. It is very important for the grout to be sealed because it is naturally porous and will stain easily. Most installers of tile floors do not seal them, because grout has to set and cure first. It’s something that you should do to keep your grout looking and performing at its best. As a bonus, sealed grout is much easier to keep clean.
Sealing is done to strengthen tile or grout’s defenses against dirt, spills, and erosion of grout, but not all tile needs to be sealed.
If your tile is ceramic or porcelain, it probably won’t need to be sealed because ceramic and porcelain tiles are non-porous. There are some exceptions to this, so check with your manufacturer to be sure. If your tile is stone (slate, marble, granite, travertine, etc.) then it will need to be sealed. Stone is naturally porous and will absorb spills and stain fairly easily if not sealed properly.
You can sometimes tell if your tile or grout has been sealed by spreading a few drops of water on them. If the tile and/or grout darken or change color, then they are probably not sealed. If they stay the same color, they may have already been sealed.
Always follow your manufacturer’s instructions on a schedule for sealing grout and tile.
Features + Benefits:
- Heavy duty stain protection
- Make for easier grout cleaning
- Sustains it’s natural look longer
Grout seal expected wear: 3-5 years on interior surfaces & 1-3 years on exterior surfaces
Sealing of grout and porous tiles (such as travertine, terracotta, granite, marble, polished porcelain, limestone & sandstone etc) is necessary to protect them from contamination and premature decay. Even older tiles and grout can be cleaned and resealed to give them back a new look.
Sealing your porous tiles and grout provides you with a reaction time to deal with spills. An unsealed floor can become stained instantaneously, whereas a floor that is sealed is stain resistant with a reaction time of up to 4-5 hours.
